The Cambridge International Legal-English Certificate [ILEC]
The Cambridge ILEC examination provides the means of acquiring advanced qualifications Legal-English, equivalent to ALTE Levels 3 or 4 [The Association of Language Testers in Europe]. These correspond to levels B2 or C1 of the Council of Europe's Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
The examination comprises four papers, each of which is equivalent to twenty-five per cent of the maximum total mark.
The examination is based on realistic tasks similar to the kind that international lawyers deal with in their professional environment. The ILEC qualification provides certified evidence of the holder's ability to deploy English in practical situations, which include participation in meetings and discussions of a legal nature, delivery of verbal opinions, presentations and arguments, and production of texts, including legal letters, memoranda, and proposals.
ILEC is recognised by leading associations of lawyers including the European Company Lawyers Association, the European Young Bar Association, the International Association of Young Lawyers, and the European Law Students Association.
The three pass-grades awarded by Cambridge are: C1 Pass with Merit; C1 Pass; B2 Pass.
