The PET Certificate is a lifelong General English qualification that corresponds to Level 2 of the Association of Language Testers in Europe (ALTE) and Level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL).
The Preliminary English Test consists in three papers: Reading & Writing; Listening; Speaking.
The certificate is recognised as evidence of ability to use simple English to communicate with native speakers, understand the main points of instructions or public announcements, deal with most situations encountered when travelling, ask questions, take notes in meetings, take part in conversations at work, write letters, and read textbooks or magazine articles.
These courses provide a learning experience similar to studying at the University of Oxford. They strengthen reading, writing, use of language, listening, speaking, and feature authentic mock PET examinations to measure learning progress.
There are five courses and, apart from the Script Correction course, each delivers exclusive live personal distance teaching.
Standard Course
The Standard Course is divided into four monthly modules of weekly written homework assignments. In each four week module there is an essay, a summary task, a mock PET examination, and an open assignment for any legitimate learning purpose, such as an additional essay.
Each of the sixteen written homework scripts forms the basis of an exclusive live interactive teaching session called a tutorial. Tutorials last for an hour, as they do at Oxford, and deliver personal teaching based on your current work assignment. This intellectual experience will encourage you to enquire further into the current topic and extend your use of English.
Professional Course
The Professional Course includes the features of the Standard Course, together with comprehensive colour coded script analyses. These provide detailed corrections, explications, written comments, and teaching notes on each assignment script.
Script Correction Course
Apart from the audio teaching sessions and the Paper 3 Speaking tests, the Script Correction Course includes the features of the Professional Course, and is ideal if a reliable Internet connection is unavailable.
Conversational Course
The four Conversational Course modules provide weekly homework assignments based on BBC Radio 4 discussions between experts in particular fields of enquiry. Each of the sixteen weekly assignment scripts forms the basis of a live one hour personal tutorial via Skype. This exclusive personal tuition provides an intellectual experience that inspires further enquiry into the current topic and exercises the use of English.
The Conversational Course may be combined with the PET Exam Course.
Exam Course
The Exam Course is made up of four mock PET exams based on sets of authentic past papers. The live Speaking tests feature one tutor acting as your examiner and another as your examination partner. Grading of each paper provides an effective measure of your progress during the course.
