TOLES ADVANCED CERTIFICATE COURSES

To apply for a TOLES Advanced course, please use this link: TOLES Advanced Course

These courses provide a learning experience similar to studying at the University of Oxford. They strengthen reading, writing, use of language, listening, speaking, and reasoning skills in Legal English, and feature mock TOLES Advanced examinations for practice at answering the papers and assessing learning progress.

There are four courses to choose from and apart from the Script Correction course, each delivers exclusive live one to one distance teaching.

Standard Course

The Standard Course monthly module consists in weekly homework assignments. The full course of four modules covers the ten units of the prescribed coursebook, the Exam Course module, and two final ad hoc assignments that deal with any outstanding issues concerning language ability or examination technique.

Each weekly homework script forms the basis of an exclusive live interactive tutorial that lasts for an hour, as they do at Oxford. Each tutorial delivers individual teaching based on the current task. This intellectual experience encourages fresh enquiry into the topic, which further exercises the use of Legal English.

Professional Course

The Professional Course includes the features of the Standard Course together with exclusive comprehensive colour coded script analyses. These provide detailed corrections, explications, written comments, and teaching notes on each assignment script.

Script Correction Course

Apart from the audio tutorials, the Script Correction Course includes the features of the Professional Course and is ideal when reliable Internet access is impossible.

Exam Course

The Exam Course features three authentic mock TOLES Advanced examinations that test Legal English Reading and Writing ability. The course also includes a comprehensive live discussion of examination technique. The assessment of each mock examination paper provides an effective measure of your readiness to sit the TOLES Advanced examination.

THE TOLES ADVANCED EXAMINATION SYLLABUS

The TOLES Advanced Certificate corresponds to Level 4 of the Association of Language Testers in Europe (ALTE) and Level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL).

The TOLES Advanced Examination syllabus requires use of vocabulary in the areas of Contract Law, Business and Commercial Law, The law of Tort, Property and Real Estate Law, Employment Law, The law of Intellectual Property and Copyright, International Law, Tax Law, Insurance and Banking Law, and professional Communication.

The syllabus also covers the style of formal written Legal English, including the peculiar grammatical structure of Legal English and the use of archaic terms and structures in General English encountered throughout the profession. There is a redrafting exercise, which gives candidates the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge of the differences between American Legal English and the new, Plain English style of England, Wales, and the EU.

Other important requirements of the syllabus are listed below:

An awareness of the language register used to draft and analyse contracts and other agreements, to the extent that candidates are expected to provide a detailed analysis of an extract of a legal agreement, thus demonstrating their ability to understand and explain contractual documents.

An awareness of the style of a business letter between two professionals or between a lawyer and a client, to the extent that candidates are able to rewrite an inadequately written letter.

An awareness of the language register used in meetings and negotiations to discuss legal matters. This requires knowledge of idiom as well as more formal styles of expression, to the extent that candidates can explain an idiomatic exchange between two lawyers or a lawyer and client.

An awareness of the most common legal phrases according to lexical language learning.

An understanding and recognition of the prepositions used in a Legal English framework.
